More than a dozen contemporary pieces of art, valued collectively at $60 to $90 million, are being exhibited at Katara Cultural Village this weekend by Sotheby’s auction house.
The 15 works, which can viewed at the Katara Art Center, Building 15, through Monday, Oct. 7, are being previewed ahead of the New York Contemporary Art Evening Sale in November, in part to woo buyers.
In April, a Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Doha auction fetched more than $15 million, setting a regional record.
Referencing that auction„ Sotheby’s said in a statement:
Doha is an ideal audience for these artworks as it is home to the outstanding collection of Contemporary Art housed in Mathaf, and for this exhibition we have chosen a range of works that is representative of the major sale that will follow in New York in November – pieces that are not only global in their appeal, but also reflect the international nature of Doha’s important arts scene and culture.
The highlight of the exhibition is said to be Andy Warhol’s Liz #1 (Early Colored Liz) from 1963, which is estimated to be worth $20 to $30 million.
The work is one of 13 paintings of Elizabeth Taylor made by Warhol that have been acclaimed for depicting the late actress’s roller coaster life.
