A new major art exhibition featuring paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, performances and interactive video game designs by 15 contemporary Chinese artists is scheduled to open tomorrow at Qatar Museum’s Al Riwaq gallery near the Museum of Islamic Art.
Curated by New York-based artist Cai Guo-Qiang, What about the Art? Contemporary Art from China is one of the major events planned to mark the Qatar-China 2016 Year of Culture.
The artist returns following a 2011 visit during which his works were shown at Qatar’s Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf).

In a statement, QM explained the focus of the exhibition:
“In response to the lack of detailed consideration given to contemporary Chinese artists’ artistic value and originality, the exhibition confronts the contemporary art world with the questions: What about the art itself? How do these Chinese artists contribute to the creativity of contemporary art?
What About the Art? Contemporary Art from China examines the issue of creativity—a topic rarely touched upon in the multitude of exhibitions on Chinese contemporary art.”
The new exhibition comes as QM, like many state-supported organizations, grapples with reduced funding amid government cuts.
What About the Art? runs through July 16.
