Qatar’s Emir has dismissed the viability of a UN-Arab League peace plan in Syria, calling instead for the arming of the opposition there.
His remarks, which were made in Rome yesterday, come ahead of an Arab League meeting today in Doha with UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
Last week, Annan, architect of a collapsing ceasefire in Syria, argued that there was still hope for peace and that arming the rebels would be “disastrous.”
At least 41 people have reportedly been killed in violence since the UN-backed ceasefire came into effect on Thursday morning, and the humanitarian crisis continues to deterioriate, Syrian activists say.
