Fans are looking to secure a flight ticket to Qatar ahead of the FIFA World Cup but are concerned about the high prices.
A glitch in the Spanish travel agency ‘eDreams’ accidentally advertised flight tickets to Qatar for just $1.50. This surprising bargain was brought under social media spotlight by Argentinian influencer MartÃn MartÃnez, where it was revealed that the purchase of four round trip tickets to the Gulf country was offered for less than $10.
With the flight fares experiencing high rates ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 due in November, the influencer noticed some flights offered by the Spanish travel agency offered for less than $1 on Wednesday.
“My whole body started to tremble, and I was really on edge,” MartÃnez tweeted. “My friends and I started to fill in our details, but inside we were thinking ‘what the hell are we doing? This clearly isn’t real!'”
The influencer went viral on social media with such an unbelievable bargain announcement, prompting many to head to the agency’s website to secure their own tickets to the host country of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
The site however was taken down within a few minutes. The Argentinian influencer did still receive the flight confirmation along with the boarding pass.
“We received the confirmation from the company, through the application, through the chats, also from the flight, through the airline, even the boarding pass. The company debited our bank accounts,” MartÃnez told local media.
The agency ‘eDreams’ emailed those with tickets purchased under this bargain with a message stating that their tickets have been cancelled.
The influencer expressed that the Spanish agency should be held accountable for cancelling their tickets as it had confirmed their flight with Air France over the phone, saying: “We want our tickets no matter what!”
Since, MartÃnez has been calling for a collective lawsuit against the Spanish agency.
In a recent statement, ‘eDreams’ provided an apology for the confusion, confirming several glitches in pricing for many international flights. It also confirmed that a full refund will be handed to customers affected by this mistake.
“Due to an error, we briefly offered the wrong fare for flights from Santiago to Sydney. The bug was quickly identified and corrected. We apologise for this. We have cancelled all reservations made under these erroneous rates and We will provide a full refund to all customers. We are working to prevent this from happening again.”
The cancellation was delivered some time later for the influencer as MartÃnez had already booked a 33-night stay in Doha, putting him out of approximately $85.
Flight fares soar ahead of World Cup 2022
FIFA World Cup organisers estimate that about 1.5 million visitors will attend the upcoming major football event.
Airlines have significantly increased their flight prices to Qatar during the tournament dates.
The countries which have requested the most ticket applications to date, include the host nation Qatar as well as Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Mexico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
At a regional level for instance, a one-way ticket from Dubai to Doha on November 20 has reached 4000-6,000 QAR, compared to its usual average of 600-500 QAR on a normal day. Return tickets on the same dates fare at 8,500 QAR.
As of February, fares from Argentina to Doha on November 20 have exceeded 17,000 QAR for a one-way ticket on Qatar Airways, whilst tickets from England have spiked to 5,000 QAR.
For Brazil, supporters may also have to pay an amount nearing 12,596 QAR for a one-way ticket and almost double for an economy round-trip.
