Arms may be the only way to achieve peace.
Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar, arguing in favor of supplying weapons to the Syrian opposition in a bid to make the conflict a fair fight on the ground, as quoted by the National.
Al Thani, who was addressing world leaders during yesterday’s Friends of Syria meeting in Doha, also urged Lebanon’s Hezbollah to stop supporting embattled Syrian president Bashar Al Assad.
Though Qatar sided with the Shia group during its war with Israel in 2006, the political situation has changed, QNA reports:
“Today, the State of Qatar disagrees with Hezbollah because it is no longer defending its country but became involved in a dogmatic fight.” They are also intervening in the affairs of another country which will not lead to stability, the PM added.
Earlier this week, Qatar reportedly expelled some 18 Lebanese citizens thought to have been affiliated with Hezbollah, leading to fears among Shias across the Gulf that they could be targeted next.
Saturday’s meeting ended with representatives from 11 countries, including KSA, Turkey and the US, vowing to increase humanitarian, political and military support to the opposition in a bid to take down Assad as soon as possible.
