More than a dozen construction workers in Qatar were injured, one critically, in an onsite accident at Lusail City last night, the Peninsula reports.
Several of the men were admitted to Hamad Hospital last night after a steel structure of an under-construction bridge collapsed, toppling on top of them, the newspaper states.
The workers were rescued by a crane, the report continues:
Most of the victims suffered leg and hand fractures and cuts in different parts of their bodies, apparently caused by steel rods. There were about 35 workers on duty but some of them were at their accommodation when the incident happened, said a source from a company involved in the project.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Construction site injuries are common in Qatar, and the source of growing international pressure to shore up workers’ safety, especially in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup.
Last year, HMC treated 1,000 patients for falls from heights alone. Health officials said the number of injuries will only go down if companies are held responsible for their safety records.
Anyone know more? Thoughts?
