Qatar and Japan highlighted cooperation on energy, security, and regional stability while setting the stage for deeper bilateral ties.
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi co-chaired the Third Qatar–Japan Strategic Dialogue on Tuesday.
The dialogue reflected the strength of the Qatar–Japan partnership, further reinforced by the announcement of a broader Strategic Partnership in 2023.
Both ministers commended the steady progress in relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors. They also reviewed achievements since the Second Strategic Dialogue held in 2023.
Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in areas critical to global and regional stability, including defense, energy, economic and technological cooperation, as well as cultural and educational exchange.
The ministers exchanged views on key regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East, Palestine, Iran, and Syria, alongside East Asian affairs.
Both sides emphasised the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and multilateral engagement in fostering peace and stability.
Economic and energy cooperation featured prominently, with both countries reaffirming the importance of energy security, stable supply, and joint efforts in technology and innovation.
The ministers also highlighted trade, investment, and cooperation in advanced industries as key drivers of sustainable economic growth and diversification.
The dialogue also reaffirmed commitments to defense and security cooperation, including maritime security and freedom of navigation, in line with shared regional interests.
Relevant working groups will continue to meet throughout 2026, with outcomes to be presented at the Fourth Qatar–Japan Strategic Dialogue, scheduled to be held in Tokyo.
In a separate meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that trade, economic, and investment ties have been central to the robust relationship between Qatar and Japan, while commending the significant contribution of Japanese companies to Qatar’s development.
