Arab leaders gathered in Doha on the final day of official condolences to pay their respects following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Regional leaders travelled to Doha on Wednesday to offer condolences following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, as three days of official condolences at Lusail Palace drew to a close.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan led a senior delegation to Lusail Palace, accompanied by senior officials including Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Abu Dhabi Deputy Ruler Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Their visit followed earlier condolences offered by Ras Al Khaimah Ruler Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi and Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II also travelled to Doha to pay his respects, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was received later in the day.
Yemen was represented by Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Mohammed Al Alimi, while Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also attended the condolences.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Doha from Tehran to convey condolences, following an earlier message of sympathy to Qatar’s leadership.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until handing power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013. During his 18-year reign, he transformed Qatar into a major regional and international player through its diplomacy, energy sector, global investments, media, education and sport, while establishing the country as a key mediator in regional conflicts.
Wednesday marked the final day of official condolences at Lusail Palace, where the Amir received heads of state, senior officials, diplomats, citizens and residents paying their respects to the late Father Amir.
The three-day mourning period concluded with delegations from across the Arab world and the wider region gathering to honour one of the principal architects of modern Qatar.
