Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, continued to receive condolences from world leaders on Wednesday, the third and final day of official mourning following the death of the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
At Lusail Palace, Sheikh Tamim welcomed a series of high-level delegations who travelled to Doha to express their sympathies and solidarity with the State of Qatar.
Among those paying their respects were French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, representing the United Kingdom, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Tajikistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Suleiman Ziyozoda, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and member of the UAE Supreme Council.
Other leaders included German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliev, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Nepalese Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Martínez, and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The meetings were attended by senior Qatari officials, including Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, Deputy Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, Speaker of the Shura Council, alongside members of the ruling family and the sons of the late Father Amir.
Over the previous two days, the Amir also received heads of state, ministers, dignitaries, accredited members of the diplomatic corps, and large numbers of Qatari citizens and residents who came to offer their condolences.
The official mourning period concludes on Wednesday evening, bringing to an end four days of national mourning declared following the Father Amir’s death. The Amiri Diwan also suspended work across ministries, government bodies and public institutions from Monday, with employees due to return to work on Sunday, 19 July.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was laid to rest on Sunday following funeral prayers at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha. The funeral was attended by Sheikh Tamim, members of the ruling family, senior officials, and large crowds of citizens and residents before the late Father Amir was buried at Lusail Cemetery.
Widely regarded as one of the architects of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad oversaw a period of rapid economic growth and major developments in the country’s energy, education, media and infrastructure sectors during his time in power.
