Peninsula: Emir’s glasses top charity auction with QR2.4m sale
The Social Development Center raised QR7.8 million ($2.1m) last night at its eight charity gala dinner, auctioning off collectors items, as well as the pair of glasses the Emir was wearing.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s glasses, which were the last item to be auctioned off, were the single most expensive article sold, going for the price of QR2.4 million, the Peninsula newspaper reports.
Amongst the other top-grossing items were a letter written by Mahatma Gandhi in 1931, a jersey signed by Brazilian football legend Pele, a jersey & ball signed by FC Barcelona with VIP tickets, and a Cobra Recreation car.
The Social Development Centre, a part of Qatar Foundation, states its leading objective as “promoting the role of family in the society and maintaining its social and economic cohesion and stability.” The money will be used in its entrepreneurship funds for young Qataris and families.
