On Dec. 18, 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, the founder of Qatar, succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, as ruler and unified the country.
Since 2007, Qatar has commemorated the occasion with increasing enthusiasm and events that foster unity between nationals and expats alike.
