A Filipina nurse is dead and another one is in the hospital after the two women were hit by a speeding vehicle in Abu Hamour over the weekend.
According to the Gulf Times, the deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Cheryl Mae Ayugat Wawey.
Citing Philippine Overseas Labour Office officials, the newspaper said the women were leaving Dar Al Salam Mall when they were hit by the car at around 8pm on Thursday.
Wawey was apparently killed on the spot, while her colleague was taken to the Hamad Hospital.
An investigation is underway about what happened and there were no details about the driver.
Grieving
The nurses work for the Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Center in Najma. Speaking to Doha News today, colleagues said they were grieving Wawey’s death.
The CEO of the Naseem Al Rabeeh healthcare group in Qatar said that officials are now working to repatriate Wawey’s body as soon as possible.
Management is also meeting to discuss how they can financially assist the nurse’s family in the Philippines, Baba Shahnawaz told Doha News.
“She has been working with us since the last two years and was a dedicated staffer,” he added.
Wawey’s colleague is now in stable condition at Hamad and “hopefully she may get better in the coming days,” he said.
Following the incident, Philippines labor attache David Des Dicang said the embassy is advising nationals to be alert when crossing the street.
However, he added in this case, the two women had been following traffic signs, Gulf Times said.
