Dubai court fines, jails Qatari for drug smuggling
A Dubai court has sentenced a 63-year-old Qatari man to 10 years in jail and fined him QR100,000 for drug smuggling.
The man’s lawyer said that he was coerced into confessing that he smuggled 13lbs (6kg) of hashish and 800 amphetamine pills into the UAE.
The National reports:
“His confession during police investigations was taken under force as he was beaten by police who smashed his teeth and jaw and caused him bruising all over his body,” the defendant’s defence lawyer, Eisa Bin Hayder, told the court. He asked the presiding judge to order a forensic examination of his client.
The man, identified only as “JS,” will be deported back to Qatar after serving his sentence.
