Doha News has become inaccessible to many in Qatar after both the nation’s telecom providers apparently blocked the website early this afternoon.
Users who try to access DN (dohanews.co) via Ooredoo and Vodafone internet are met with “this site has been blocked” messages.
However, residents in some offices and on networks that use VPN, including at Qatar University and Qatar Foundation, have not had trouble accessing the site.
Additionally, Doha News remains accessible to people outside of Qatar, suggesting the issue involves an internet service provider (ISP) firewall.
Cause
Why the site is unavailable remains unclear for now. Doha News has sent requests to various officials for comment.
In the meantime, DN is looking at using an alternate URL until the issue is resolved.
In Qatar, telecom providers usually block websites flagged by their morality filters.
This generally includes sites with material that could be considered pornographic or critical of Islam.
Meanwhile, reports of controversial political sites being censored in recent years have been few and far between.
