A long, unexplained traffic jam on the Corniche today has residents complaining once again about road woes in Qatar.
From about 7am to 10am, cars on the main road leading into Dafna/West Bay have been moving at a crawl.
Some have said the backup stretches as far as Toyota signal. Other report traffic congestion in and around the Doha International Airport’s Arrivals Terminal, and getting onto the Corniche from Ras Abu Abboud Street.
Compounding frustrations appears to be that no one knows what is causing the backups. The popular theories are the ongoing construction around Sheraton Roundabout; a potential car accident; or a VIP convoy, though no one has reported witnessing the last two possibilities.
The Ministry of Interior, which frequently warns commuters about backups on the roads via social media, has not mentioned the congestion in the Corniche area this morning.
And Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal), which is converting two more roundabouts – Sheraton and Dafna R/As – on the Corniche into signalized intersections, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Here are some of the reactions from commuters this morning:
Were you stuck in the congestion today? Thoughts?
