According to IRNA, the statement Iran had prepared emphasised solidarity with Qatar and reiterated Tehran’s support for its right to defend its citizens, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
While the United Nations Security Council members issued a rare joint statement on Thursday condemning Israel’s strike on Doha and reaffirming support for Qatar’s sovereignty, several countries, including Iran, were not granted the opportunity to speak during the session.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, had prepared a statement strongly condemning what Tehran described as “terrorist aggression” by Israel and affirming Qatar’s “right to self-defence under international law and the UN Charter,” but was unable to deliver it on the floor.
Speaking time during the session was primarily allocated to the directly involved parties, Qatar and Israel, as well as delegations from Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, and regional blocs such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kyrgyzstan, and Iran were reportedly denied the opportunity to address the Council.
According to IRNA, the statement Iran had prepared emphasised solidarity with Qatar and reiterated Tehran’s support for its right to defend its citizens, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly and unequivocally condemns the terrorist aggression and armed attacks carried out by the Zionist regime against the State of Qatar, which resulted in the martyrdom and injury of several Palestinian and Qatari civilians.”
It also referenced Israel’s previous military actions across the region, including strikes in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran itself.
Iravani’s statement recalled the 12-day “unprovoked war” launched by Israel in June against Iranian civilian infrastructure and safeguarded nuclear facilities. “This failure of the Security Council to act emboldened Israel to persist in its crimes across the region with complete impunity,” the statement read.
Iran’s UN envoy Amir-Saeid Iravani stressed Tehran’s support for Qatar, saying, “Iran firmly supports the right to self-defence of Qatar under international law and the UN Charter to respond to such reckless violations and to take all necessary political, diplomatic, and legal measures to protect its citizens, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”
The Iranian envoy also warned that Israel’s leadership had threatened further aggression, vowing to target Hamas leaders wherever they may be present. “If the Security Council fails to act today, another country will inevitably be added to Israel’s list of aggressions,” the statement said.
