Qatar has secured a key legal role at the United Nations, with diplomat Abdulaziz Fadhalah Al Sulaiti elected rapporteur of the General Assembly’s Sixth Committee.
Qatari diplomat Abdulaziz Fadhalah Al Sulaiti has been elected rapporteur of the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly for its 81st session, placing a Qatari representative in a key role within one of the UN’s main legal bodies.
Al Sulaiti, who now serves as Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York, will take on the role of rapporteur when the committee begins its upcoming session, which runs from 5 October to 20 November 2026.
The Sixth Committee handles legal matters at the General Assembly, including issues related to international law, its codification, and its progressive development. As rapporteur, Al Sulaiti will serve on the committee’s bureau during a session expected to address legal questions within the UN system.
His election follows previous interventions by Al Sulaiti at the UN on issues linked to international law, the UN Charter, counterterrorism, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
In October 2025, he delivered Qatar’s statement before the Sixth Committee under the agenda item on measures to eliminate international terrorism, reaffirming Qatar’s condemnation of terrorism in all its forms.
Earlier this year, Al Sulaiti also addressed a meeting of the Special Committee on the UN Charter, where he underscored Qatar’s commitment to the rules of international law and the peaceful settlement of international disputes as a central principle of the UN Charter.
His appointment reflects the growing visibility of Qatari diplomatic expertise on international multilateral platforms, while showcasing Qatar’s continued engagement across the United Nations and wider global multilateral organisations.
