Life in Qatar rapidly returned to normal moments after the attack and no casualties occurred.
An Iranian missile strike on the U.S. Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar last month affected a geodesic dome used to house communications equipment, a Pentagon spokesperson confirmed on Friday. The attack caused “minimal damage” and no casualties, according to spokesperson Sean Parnell.
“One Iranian ballistic missile impacted Al-Udeid Air Base June 23 while the remainder of the missiles were intercepted by U.S. and Qatari air defence systems,” Parnell said in a press statement, as quoted by multiple media outlets, including Anadolu and the Associated Press.
Parnell noted that “there were no injuries” and the military base “remains fully operational and capable of conducting its mission” alongside its Qatari partners.
The statement came after Iran International first reported on the damage after obtaining satellite photos of the site, which showed the rest of the base unharmed by the attack.
Iran had attacked the Al-Udeid Air Base, the largest American military base in the region, on June 23 in retaliation for the U.S. attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites amid war with Israel.
Qatar’s defence ministry had confirmed that the Gulf state’s air defences intercepted all but one missile, which landed inside the base without the occurrence of any casualties. The Gulf state had also temporarily closed its air space an hour before the attack.
Life in Qatar rapidly returned to normal moments after the attack and the country re-opened its airspace by midnight. Qatar also helped broker the ceasefire between Iran and Israel within hours since the strike, ending the 12-day conflict.
U.S. President Donald Trump had described the Iranian attack as a “very weak response”, noting that Tehran gave Washington an early notice before striking the site.
On June 26, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the attack delivered a “slap to America’s face” while threatening to carry out a similar move if his country is attacked again.
“The fact that the Islamic Republic has access to key U.S. centers in the region and can take action whenever it deems necessary is a significant matter. Such an action can be repeated in the future too. Should any aggression occur, the enemy will definitely pay a heavy price,” he said on X.
