Concourses D and E at Hamad International Airport introduce smart boarding as well as 17 new gates, boosting capacity and comfort.
Hamad International Airport (DOH) has officially opened its advanced Concourses D and E, a transformative expansion project that increases its annual passenger capacity to over 65 million.
Completed ahead of schedule, the development solidifies the airport’s position as the World’s Best Airport, a title awarded by Skytrax in 2024, while elevating traveller comfort and operational efficiency.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasised the project’s strategic importance.
“Hamad International Airport is more than a gateway; it is a vital pillar of Qatar’s growth and global connectivity,” he said. “While many global airport expansions have faced delays, we are proud to have delivered this major development ahead of schedule.”
He added that the expansion aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, strengthening the nation’s aviation network and economic resilience.

The expansion, initiated in 2018, represents the final phase of a multi-year development plan that began with the unveiling of the ORCHARD in 2022, a 6,000-square-metre indoor tropical garden.
The new concourses integrate seamlessly into the existing terminal, expanding its total area by 14 percent to 845,000 square metres and adding 17 aircraft contact gates, bringing the total to 62. This upgrade reduces reliance on bus transfers and enhances connectivity for airlines and passengers alike.

The concourses incorporate smart boarding systems to streamline document checks and reduce wait times, alongside upgraded facilities designed to enhance the passenger experience.
At least nine new retail and dining outlets, operated by Qatar Duty Free, expand the airport’s leisure offerings by 2,700 square metres, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for shopping and dining.
Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Operating Officer at the airport said the new expansion marks a significant milestone in enhancing operational efficiency.
“This development optimises passenger flow and resource management, ensuring smoother services,” he said.

With its blend of innovation, sustainability, and luxury, Hamad International Airport continues to set benchmarks in global aviation, positioning Qatar as a leading hub for international travel.
Sustainability remains a cornerstone of the project, with Concourses D and E targeting LEED Gold Certification and meeting GSAS 4-Star Design & Build standards. Energy-efficient systems, advanced water management, and thermal comfort strategies underscore the airport’s environmental commitments.
Universal design principles, including barrier-free pathways and dedicated assistance services, ensure accessibility for all travellers.
