On the sidelines of the 2026 G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, Trump has denied investment rumours regarding Iran and praised Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for the country’s bravery during the U.S.-Iran war.
Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, where both leaders underscored the strength of bilateral relations and discussed regional developments, particularly the recent US–Iran agreement and its implications for Middle East stability.
At the outset of the meeting, President Trump praised the evolving diplomatic progress with Iran, describing the deal as “fair” and “good”, and expressing optimism about its trajectory, stating it “should be successful” and that the next phase of negotiations was expected to “be actually easier”.
He also clarified Washington’s position on the agreement, stressing that the United States would not be “investing any money in Iran”, dismissing contrary claims as a “ridiculous” rumour.
In comments reflecting on Qatar’s diplomatic role, Trump said: “We are very, very impressed with Qatar and the way they handled things,” and added, “Working with Qatar and the people of Qatar was really a pleasure,” praising what he described as the country’s “great bravery”.
For his part, the Amir of Qatar welcomed the agreement and highlighted its potential impact on regional stability, emphasising continued cooperation with Washington to support peace efforts.
Sheikh Tamim said, “I want to thank you for your leadership in this very critical time in the Middle East,” adding that with continued momentum, “I think we can achieve and do great things in the region.”
He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to diplomatic solutions and regional security, particularly in relation to maritime safety and the free flow of international trade through strategic waterways.
He also welcomed the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran in a post on X on Tuesday following talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Evian.
The Amir thanked President Trump, Pakistan and other partners who supported the agreement, and expressed hope that upcoming negotiations would advance constructive dialogue, cooperation, and regional and international security through peaceful and diplomatic solutions.
The leaders also reviewed the broader strategic partnership between Qatar and the United States, including significant mutual investments and expanding cooperation in key sectors such as energy, industry, artificial intelligence, and trade.
Discussions further addressed wider regional challenges, including stability in the Middle East and coordination on energy security, with both sides reiterating their shared interest in sustaining dialogue and de-escalation.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides, including Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reflecting the high-level importance of continued coordination between Doha and Washington on regional and international issues.
