The new multinational hub at Al Udeid Air Base aims to strengthen integrated air and missile defense across the Middle East, according to U.S. Central Command.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and regional partners opened a new coordination cell at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar to strengthen integrated air and missile defence.
The Middle Eastern Air Defense – Combined Defense Operations Cell (MEAD-CDOC), located within the Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC), brings together personnel from the United States and regional partners.
CENTCOM announced the initiative on Tuesday via an official statement, emphasising that the new cell is designed to enhance coordination and integration among partner nations facing growing air and missile threats.
“This is a significant step forward in strengthening regional defence cooperation,” CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said in the statement.
“This cell will improve how regional forces coordinate and share air and missile defence responsibilities across the Middle East.”
The MEAD-CDOC is embedded within the Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC), a Qatar-based command centre established more than 20 years ago.
The CAOC currently includes representatives from 17 nations who coordinate the employment of military air assets across the Middle East region.
By placing the MEAD-CDOC within this established framework, CENTCOM aims to leverage existing multinational cooperation while expanding capabilities specifically focused on air and missile defence.
According to CENTCOM, the new coordination cell will improve real-time information sharing, early warning, and joint planning to counter threats such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial systems.
“U.S. Air Force Central (AFCENT) service members will work alongside regional counterparts at the MEAD-CDOC in planning multinational exercises, conducting drills, and responding to contingencies,” the statement shared.
“The cell will also be responsible for sharing information and threat warnings.”
By placing the MEAD-CDOC within this established framework, CENTCOM aims to leverage existing multinational cooperation while expanding capabilities specifically focused on air and missile defence.
Home to 10,000 U.S. personnel, Al Udeid Air Base is the largest American military installation in the Middle East.
The establishment of the MEAD-CDOC comes after the U.S. Army Central opened two bilateral Combined Command Posts for air and missile defence with Qatar and Bahrain last year.
The facilities were created to centralise and enhance joint air defense planning, coordination, and operational execution.
