The Taliban has announced it is halting peace talks with the Unites States being carried out through its political bureau in Qatar, due to “wasting time” on the part of American negotiators.Â
In a statement released today, the Taliban, which officially goes by the name The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, said:
The Islamic Emirate has decided to suspend all talks with Americans taking place in Qatar from today onwards until the Americans clarify their stance on the issues concerned and until they show willingness in carrying out their promises instead of wasting time.
The statement ultimately makes little mention of any role the Qatari government may have in negotiations, focusing primarily on the “shaky, erratic and vague standpoint of the Americans,” adding that “all the responsibility for the halt also falls on their shoulders.”
One of the primary gripes of the Taliban negotiators is that the US has yet to take any practical steps in terms of releasing its members from Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
