Spokesman: Defected Syrian PM in Qatar to ‘spell out plans’ to topple regime
Former Syrian prime minister, who defected earlier this month, has arrived in Qatar to “spell out his plans and his program” to topple Bashar al-Assad’s regime, his spokesman said.
Riad Hijab arrived to Doha on Thursday for a three-day visit before returning to Jordan, where he fled to nearly two weeks ago, spokesman Mohamed Atari told AFP.
The former PM, the highest-ranked official to defect, has said that the regime is “on the brink of collapse” and that Assad has lost control of two-thirds of the country.
The Daily Star reports:
The United States lifted sanctions against Hijab and unfroze his assets following his defection in a move it said was aimed at convincing members of Assad’s inner circle that they have not been permanently blacklisted.
Hijab was replaced as prime minister by former health minister Wael al-Halqi.
Anyone spotted him around town?
