Rapper Kanye West’s new 30-minute short film “Cruel Summer,” described as a seven-screen art installation, has premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival.
Containing footage taken during a hush-hush and frantic shoot in Qatar last month, the film stars Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls for a blind Arabian princess, media reports state.
It was shown on seven screens that alternately came on and off, requiring the audience to look around at the images (including at the floor and ceiling), instead of staring straight ahead.
West’s girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, was the first to give the film a standing ovation, reports said.
MTV reports:
“It was weird! But it was dope,” Cudi said. “I’m nervous, just like with anything I do, with people watching, but I’m really proud of it. I’m happy that Kanye had me as part of it. It’s so humbling. He’s a genius, he’s the best, the illest.”
…”We were literally shooting in Qatar less than a month ago,” West said. “It was the most impossible feat, all odds were against us having this moment, showing this at Cannes. … so you guys are seeing the rough draft of this concept.”
Can’t wait to see the finished version!
