Qatar raked in seven travel awards during this year’s “Oscars of the travel industry,” handed down at a ceremony at Katara on Wednesday.

Among the honors: Doha won World’s Leading Business Travel Destination; Qatar Airways won World’s Leading Airline for its business class and business class lounge (though Etihad got the overall award for World’s Leading Airline); and Aspire Zone was named World’s Leading Sports Tourism Development Project. 

Qatar’s Tourism Authority has been very clear about its desire to bring in business tourists; chairman Ahmed Abdullah al-Nuaimi has gone as far to say:

We don’t want people to come for a $50 room to lie on the beach all day and walk around with a backpack and shorts. These are not the type of people we’re targeting.

Looks like the strategy is working!
