Qatar Scientific Club revives computer recycling program
In a bid to expand access to technology to lower-income people and help the environment, the Qatar Scientific Club is working with other institutions to recycle discarded computers.
The “green computer” project, which was launched in 2008, has recently picked up steam with a QR200,000 grant from Commercial Bank. Microsoft, the Ministry of Interior and the Public Works Authority, among others, have also contributed.
The Peninsula reports:
Organisers said the bottom line of such initiative is not just about supporting poor people to give them access to technology but more significantly on QSC’s contribution to recycle waste to help in their small way their care for the environment in the midst of the threats of global warming…
Hassan Abdulla Al Abdullah, Secretary General of QSC… said they decided to deal the issue of electronic waste by repairing old PCs that has been one of the causes of environmental damage in Qatar. Abdullah said there are about 500 poor people who benefited from the project.
