Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani received a phone call from Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi, during which the two sides discussed the latest diplomatic developments related to ongoing negotiations.
The call comes at a sensitive moment in regional diplomacy, with tensions between Iran and the United States remaining high, periodic setbacks in mediation efforts and persistent concerns over maritime security.
Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s full support for mediation efforts aimed at resolving the crisis through peaceful means, stressing the need for all parties to engage in order to create conditions for progress in negotaiations and reduce the risk of renewed escalation.
He underlined that “freedom of navigation is a well-established and non-negotiable principle,” warning that “closing the Strait of Hormuz or using it as a bargaining chip would only exacerbate the crisis and jeopardize the vital interests of the region’s countries.”
He also noted the potential repercussions for global energy and food supply chains.
Sheikh Mohammed stressed the importance of adhering to international law and the UN Charter, calling for regional stability and the welfare of populations to be prioritised.
