Qatar told the UN it remains committed to mediation and preventive diplomacy, highlighting its roles in Gaza, Congo and Afghanistan while backing efforts to reduce regional tensions.
Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to mediation, dialogue and preventive diplomacy, highlighting its ongoing efforts to support peaceful conflict resolution and reduce regional and international tensions.
The pledge was made by Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during a UN General Assembly meeting in New York on strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement, prevention and resolution of conflicts.
Addressing member states, Sheikha Alya said mediation remains one of the most effective tools for resolving disputes peacefully, preventing conflicts and building sustainable peace.
She stressed that mediation and preventive diplomacy are becoming increasingly important as the number and complexity of global conflicts continue to rise, noting that the world is witnessing the highest number of armed conflicts since the establishment of the United Nations.
Sheikha Alya said Qatar takes pride in its longstanding role in mediation, describing preventive diplomacy, mediation and the peaceful resolution of disputes as central pillars of the country’s foreign policy and consistent with both its constitution and relevant UN resolutions.
She highlighted Qatar’s mediation efforts alongside Egypt, the United States and Turkey that contributed to the Gaza ceasefire agreement signed in October last year.
The Qatari envoy reiterated Doha’s call for all parties to fulfil their commitments under the agreement, implement the ceasefire in full and ensure the sustained and uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza through the reopening of border crossings.
She also pointed to Qatar’s ongoing role in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo through the Doha Framework for a Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed on 15 November 2025.
In addition, she highlighted Qatar’s mediation efforts in Afghanistan, which led to the signing of the US-Taliban agreement in Doha in February 2020.
Sheikha Alya also reaffirmed Qatar’s support for Pakistani mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, expressing Doha’s full backing for initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening regional security and stability.
