Qatar’s national football team has nailed its third Gulf Cup title, after defeating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Riyadh last night.
According to Reuters:
“Skipper Saud Kariri opened the scoring for the Saudi team, also three-time champions, after 16 minutes at the nearly full King Fahd stadium but Qatar replied with a magnificent header from defender Al Mahdi Ali two minutes later.
Algerian-born Khoukhi Boualem scored the winner for 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar in the 58th minute to hand his team their first Gulf title away from home.”
Sports fans in Qatar were out in full force on the Corniche to celebrate the nation’s first Gulf Cup win in 10 years, and well wishes poured in on social media:

congratulations Qatar – how nice to have a good football story in the headlines at last !
The 88th ranked country in the world beat the 97th ranked country in the world.
Perhaps the rankings system is accurate?
I hope you are trying to impress us with either your football stats knowledge or your research skills. Otherwise, let’s play a game: let’s designate just one day a week, like Thursday, when we do our level best to make positive comments about positive happenings in Qatar. Got it? Your turn.
top 10 in Asia 🙂
Keeping in mind that that’s better than Australia (at the moment) and Australia have not done too badly in previous world cups…
Qatar recently beat Australia!
You don’t get invited to many parties do you
I get invited but people’s eyes begin to glaze over when i start to talk in numbers..
btw – that’s 88th equal and 97th equal..
You can only beat what is out in front of you
Or behind in this case..
Pleased for the boys… and the nation. I watched the last 20 minutes or so on TV. What I saw looked like a good game. I was REALLY impressed to see so may Qatari had travelled to watch the match live, and loved all the malarkey on the Corniche. Well done Qatar, bring on the Asian Cup!
