The top-seeded Spanish-Argentinian duo of Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia maintained their dominant run in the Premier Padel Tour, clinching the Ooredoo Qatar Major title on Saturday.
Coello and Tapia overcame second-ranked Federico Chingotto and Alejandro Galan —another Argentinian-Spanish duo — in straight sets at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex’s Centre Court.
A tough first set, which the world number ones won 7-6 following a tie-breaker, was followed by a rather easy 6-2 win in the second to defend their Qatar Major crown.
Both Tapia and Coello fell on the court in a display of raw emotions after clinching the first Major of the year.
Saturday’s finale was the season’s first match between the two pairs, who faced each other on 15 occasions in 2024. Artuto and Tapia won ten of those battles.
It was Galan and Chingotto who had the momentum coming into the clash, after lifting the trophy in Miami P1 and Santiago P1.
On the flipside, the world number ones were knocked out in the quarterfinals by lower-ranked Pablo Cardona and Leo Augsburger in the Chilean capital.
It is Tapia’s third consecutive title win in the Qatari capital, having won the Qatar Majors with Coello and then the FIP World Padel Championship triumph with the Argentinian National Team in November last year.
Brea-Triay down top seeds for the title
It was a battle of the top-ranked duos in the women’s category too, but with a twist.
Delfina Brea Senesi and Gemma Triay Pons defeated the top-seeded Spanish duo of Paula Josemaria Martin and Ariana Sanchez Fallada to clinch the Ooredoo Qatar Major title.
The Argentine-Spanish pair overcame their higher-ranked opponents 6-4, 6-4 to end the defending champions’ run in Qatar.
Brea and Triay boast a perfect record against the Spanish pair this season, winning each of the three encounters.
Sanchez and Josemaria came into the tie after dashing the fellow Spanish duo of Beatriz Gonzalez Fernandez and Claudia Fernandez Sanchez in a tough encounter that stretched to over two and a half hours.
That fatigue played a part in the finale as the top-ranked duo struggled to plot a formidable comeback in the second set after losing the first one rather easily.
Although Brea and Triay lead the ongoing season’s race, Sanchez and Josemaria continue as the world number one duo on the back of a strong campaign last year.
