One man is being treated for second-degree burns after a fishing boat caught fire near Doha Port Friday afternoon, Qatar police said.
The smell of burnt plastic hung in the air as civil defense officials hosed down the wreckage. Several fire trucks and ambulances, as well as a fire boat were at the scene.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it is thought poor maintenance contributed to the combustion of the boat’s motor and fuel tank. Nearby fishing nets also caught fire, contributing to the black smoke that billowed across the Corniche and was visible from high-rises across Doha.
Despite the cleanup, traffic has slowed from Ras Abu Abboud to the Corniche due to gawker delays.
