In this op-ed, Malta’s ambassador to Qatar, Simon Pullicino, praises Qatar’s leadership and crisis response, condemns Iran’s attacks, and calls for de-escalation and diplomacy.
I wish to thank Doha News for providing me with this opportunity to express my Government’s deepest appreciation to the leadership of the State of Qatar, whose calm, resolute, and responsible stewardship has ensured stability and security during this very challenging and stressful period for Qatar and the wider region.
Under the wise leadership of H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the safety of all residents and foreign nationals, including Maltese and European citizens.
We are particularly thankful for the tireless efforts of the Qatari defence and security authorities, whose professionalism and preparedness have helped maintain safety and reassurance across the country.
I would also like to extend heartfelt appreciation to Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism, whose coordination and assistance have been invaluable in supporting travel arrangements, providing accommodation, and clear communication to foreign residents, including those who ended up stranded.
Their responsiveness and dedication have ensured that Maltese nationals and other visitors have remained informed, protected, and supported throughout this period.
Equally, we wish to recognise the generosity and solidarity shown by the people of Qatar. The Maltese community has experienced firsthand the warmth, resilience, and unity that define Qatari society.
In moments of uncertainty, the willingness of ordinary citizens, institutions, and local partners to assist and reassure those around them has been both inspiring and deeply appreciated.
These actions reflect the enduring values of hospitality and cooperation that continue to make Qatar a safe and welcoming home for people from around the world.
Last but not least, allow me, on behalf of the Maltese Government, to condemn the Islamic Republic of Iran’s attacks on Qatar and other Gulf countries.
Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, the Hon. Dr. Ian Borg called the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani just a few hours after the start of the attacks, underscoring Malta’s commitment to stand alongside Qatar and its people in this very difficult moment.
While we commend the resilience demonstrated by Qatar, we join calls for restraint, de-escalation, and the renewed pursuit of diplomacy.
Finally, a blessed Eid Al-Fitr to the friendly people of Qatar and Muslims around the globe. Notwithstanding all the challenges, may the leadership and people of Qatar enjoy peace, stability and prosperity for years to come.
