Condolences are pouring in after two female students from Qatar University drowned last night in a student housing swimming pool.
Reports indicated that Noora Khalil Al Haidous was trying to rescue her friend Reem Saif AlKalbani from drowning, but ended up dying as well.
In a tweet yesterday, Qatar University’s President Hassan Rashid Al-Derham expressed his sympathy to the families of the deceased.
فجعنا البارحة بنبأ وفاة الطالبتين نورة الهيدوس وريم الكلباني أسأل الله أن يرحمهما ويغفر لهما وأن يلهم عائلتيهما الصبر والسلوان

Translation: We were shocked to learn the news of the passing away of the students Noora Al Haidous and Reem AlKalbani. I ask God to forgive them and have mercy on them, and to grant their families patience and fortitude.
In a statement sent to Al Sharq, the university said that it would be “following up with competent authorities on the investigation of the incident firsthand, in order to know the causes and circumstances that led to it.”
Safety questions
Questions are already being raised about what safety precautions the university has taken to keep swimmers safe.
People are also sharing their grief and condolences on two hashtags of the students’ names: نورة_الهيدوس# and ريم_الكلباني#.

Translation: The last time I saw her (Noora) was three years ago when she was handing me a piece of cake at the classroom door. May God grant her supreme paradise, and grant her loved ones patience.

Translation: Their incident is saddening. Their friendship is beautiful seeing how when she saw her friend drown, she forgot about herself and went to save her friend. May God forgive them and have mercy on them.
Meanwhile, some urged the university to take steps to prevent another tragedy in the future.

Translation: A rescue pole should be placed in all swimming pools, Dr. Hassan, and you for one are keen on doing good. The pole will help save the rescuer and the person drowning.

Translation: The simplest thing we’ve been calling for to have in our dorms is a clinic or a nurse. The swimming pool is supposed to be open during specific timings, with the presence of a trained coach or lifeguard.
Others however said it was inconsiderate to assign blame at this time.
غلطه الجامعه أم غلطتهم أنتهى الأمر وانتقلوا إلى رحمه الله إما أن تترحموا عليهم أو ألتزموا الصمت فلذويهم مشاعر #نوره_الهيدوس #ريم_الكلباني

Translation: Whether it’s the university’s fault or their’s, the incident happened and they both passed away. You either mourn their loss, or remain silent as their loved ones have feelings.
Both of the women were already buried today.
