Spanish football club FC Barcelona will play a friendly match in Qatar on Tuesday, May 24 against Saudi Arabian league champions Al-Ahli.
The team, which just won the La Liga title, said in a statement that it was playing as part of the agreement it has with Qatar Sports Investment and Qatar Airways, a five-year deal that ends in July.
Barca said the squad will leave Spain on Monday, May 23 and “return straight after the game.”
The team has been scheduled to play in two friendlies in Qatar that were previously canceled, one in 2014 and one last year.
Officials promised however that fans would see them play before the 2016 agreement was finished.
Ticket information is forthcoming.
Sponsorship in question
Barcelona and Qatar Airways have been in prolonged negotiations about whether to renew their sponsorship agreement, though many are doubtful it will happen.
When asked about the deal last week, a Qatar Airways spokesperson told Doha News that there were no updates, and “We will issue a press release when we have a resolution.”
Qatar Foundation became the first paid sponsor in FC Barcelona’s history to have its logo appear on the team’s jerseys after a €150 million (QR623 million) deal was signed in December 2010.
QF’s logo was later replaced with that of Qatar Airways. Since then, the team has worked with the national carrier to make a new, unorthodox in-flight safety video.
The video will play on Qatar Airways flights until at least July, a spokesperson previously said.
