Dubai supermarket takes Masafi water off shelves due to high chemical levels
Dubai’s Choithrams supermarket chain has removed several half-liter bottles of Masafi mineral water from its 25 stores after it was found to contain unacceptable levels of a chemical produced in water treatment.
The move follows last week’s decision by the Dubai municipality to order a recall of all bottles of Masafi, a popular water also sold in Qatar, produced on Feb. 17 after it found that one bottle had “bromates in excess of the authorized level of 10 micrograms per liter.”
Still, both government and Masafi officials stressed that there is no risk to public health or safety.
Other local supermarket chains, including Lulu and Spinneys, told the National they were not aware of the recall, and have not pulled Masafi from their shelves.
