The first phase of work to transform traffic flow on the Corniche is now underway at the Al Meena Street intersection, near the Mövenpick Hotel.
Traffic lights are to be installed at the junction, which will allow drivers to join the opposite carriageway at the intersection for the first time.
Public Works Authority Ashghal has confirmed to Doha News that this is only the beginning of upheaval on the busy street, as work begins to try to ease traffic congestion on one of Qatar’s busiest roads.
They tell us that roadworks will be carried out on each section of the road in phases – with the Peninsula reporting that every roundabout on the street (except Sheraton roundabout) will eventually be converted into an intersection with traffic lights.
No time frame has been given for the work, but if delays to recent major road projects like Salwa Road are anything to go by, the transformation of the Corniche could be some time coming.
