Qatar’s Ministry of Awqaf (endowments) and Islamic Affairs says the country can expect to see 25 new mosques open before Ramadan begins on Aug. 1 this year.
Another 71 mosques are in the works, the ministry said. And in some of Doha’s most congested areas, Qatar plans to build three-story mosques with elevators, the Gulf Times reports.
“The idea of having multi-storey mosques in crowded districts is to avoid people having to pray on streets and pavements near the mosques, especially on Fridays,” Salah bin Salem al-Bakry, director of building projects at Awqaf, said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Awqaf oversees the maintenance of some 900 mosques with a budget of more than QR460 million.
I wonder if the new state mosque will be included among the list of places opening by August?
