Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim held urgent calls with regional and international leaders condemning Iranian missile strikes on U.S. bases and urging restraint after U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran escalated tensions across the Gulf.
Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held a series of phone calls with regional and international leaders to condemn the Iranian missile attacks targeting several U.S. bases across the Middle East.
During the calls on Saturday, the Amir spoke with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, and the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
On Saturday evening, the Amir spoke with the Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The phone calls dealt with the latest developments in the region, particularly Iran’s attacks on Qatar that have persisted throughout the day. The leaders condemned the attacks on the Gulf state and voiced their solidarity with the country.
Discussions focused on the urgent need to contain the escalation and advance dialogue to safeguard regional security and stability.
The talks came in the wake of coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian military and government sites earlier on Saturday, which triggered the latest surge in tensions across the region.
In retaliation, Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones targeting U.S. bases across the Gulf.
Condemnations and coordination
Qatar’s Amir and his counterparts condemned the strikes and reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing coordination to safeguard sovereignty and regional security.
Qatar’s Amir and Saudi’s Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the rapidly evolving security situation in the region.
Both leaders emphasised the urgent need to halt any provocative actions and return to dialogue to preserve regional security and prevent wider conflict.
The Saudi Crown Prince reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s full solidarity with Qatar, strongly condemning the Iranian ballistic missile attacks on Qatari territory and pledging support for Qatar’s sovereignty, security, and stability.
In turn, the Amir expressed his deep gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s steadfast positions and brotherly solidarity, while also confirming Qatar’s continued coordination with affected countries in responding to Iranian aggression.
Meanwhile, Greece’s prime minister expressed solidarity with Qatar and readiness to support measures protecting national security, and Iraq’s prime minister condemned the attacks, confirming assistance to Qatar.
King Abdullah II of Jordan and President Sisi of Egypt also emphasised the immediate need for restraint and diplomacy, condemning the missile strikes as violations of sovereignty.
Qatar, which hosts the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base, reported that Iranian missiles were intercepted, while other Gulf countries reported similar defensive actions and temporary airspace closures due to security threats.
