The council referred the draft bill to the Health, General Services and Environment Committee.
Qatar’s Shura Council weighed in on the government-submitted animal welfare enforcement improvement bill during its regular session on Monday and referred it to the Health, General Services and the Environment Committee for detailed study and a subsequent report to the full Council.
Chaired by Shura Council speaker Hassan Al Ghanim, the session turned to the animal welfare bill, a draft aimed at strengthening enforcement mechanisms for animal protection across the country.
Council members agreed that deeper examination by the specialized committee would allow for more thorough consideration of the bill’s provisions and potential impact before the full Council debates it.
The referral underscores a focus on improving legal safeguards for animals. Specifics of the proposed law were not shared.
Following the bill’s referral, the Council proceeded with its agenda, including discussions on agricultural support mechanisms and food security and approving extensions for committee work on other legislative topics.
Reports on international parliamentary engagements were also reviewed later in the session.
The committee’s forthcoming report is expected to guide the next parliamentary phase of debate on the animal welfare enforcement improvement bill.
