Nasser Al Attiyah wins bronze in London, Qatar’s first Olympic medal in 12 years
Qatari shooter Nasser Al Attiyah has won the bronze medal in the men’s skeet competition during a shoot-off.
It is the first medal for Qatar and the Arab world at the London 2012 Olympics, and the first win for the country since Said Saif Asaad won a bronze for weightlifting in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Al Attiyah is also the first Qatar-born athlete to win an Olympic medal.
“I felt very confident and told myself I better win this time,” Al Attiyah said in remarks shared by the Qatar Olympic Committee.
“I am happy to dedicate this medal to my country and all Arabs as our first medal & God willing many more to come,” he said.
He also tweeted afterward:
I’m not supposed to be tweeting right now but I just want so say I love you all! GO #TeamQatar

The only other Olympic medal Qatar has won was its first – the bronze for the 1,500m dash at the 1992 Barcelona Games, which was taken home by Mohamed Suleiman.
American competitor Vincent Hancock took the gold in this year’s skeet shooting category, while Denmark’s Anders Golding took silver.
