Both Qataris competing on Tuesday bowed out of the championships in what proved to be a tough day.
Tuesday proved to be a gloomy affair for Qatar in Tokyo as both Ammar Ismail and Ibrahim Abbas Chuot bowed out of their respective competitions at the World Athletics Championships 2025.
Chuot missed out by mere milliseconds in the Men’s 800 metre preliminaries, whereas Ismail, the 400 metre Olympian, bowed out of the semi-finals at the Tokyo National Stadium.
Ismail finished fourth in Heat 1, clocking 44.74 seconds, yet failed to be among the non-automatic qualifiers.
The 28-year-old reigning Asian champion had qualified in style, clocking a personal-best time of 44.63 on Sunday.
Despite also finishing fourth in his heat, 21-year-old Chuot failed to advance by a whisker. He finished on 1:45.16, just 11 milliseconds short of the non-automatic qualification slot.
Ismail and Chuot join 110-metre hurdler Omar Abakar and pole vaulter Seif Mohammed in the list of Qatari athletes to have exited the event.
On Monday, Seif Mohammed had competed in the pole vault finals, aiming to better his personal best of 5.75 metres achieved on the preliminaries.
Yet, the 20-year-old settled for a ninth-place finish in an event dominated by Sweden’s multiple world record-holder Armand Duplantis.
Qatar’s 400-metre hurdle trio, however, had delivered. Abderrahman Samba, Bassem Hemeida and Ismail Doudai Abakar advanced to the semi-finals of the event.
Asian record holder Samba qualified as the winner of his heat, clocking the fastest time in the preliminaries. Hemeida won Heat 2 to advance, whereas Abakar’s second-place finish in Heat 3 was good enough.
All three will vie for finale spots on Wednesday at Japan’s National Stadium.
