Qatar’s UN envoy condemned Iranian attacks on Qatari territory as violations of international law, warning they threaten civilians and regional stability amid escalating US-Israel-Iran tensions.
Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Hend Abdulrahman Al Muftah, has condemned Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting Qatari territory and other countries, describing them as a flagrant violation of sovereignty, international law and the UN Charter.
The remarks come as Iran has launched multiple retaliatory attacks on Qatar and neighbouring Gulf countries following the launch of attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian territory on 28 February.
Speaking at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, she said the attacks pose a direct threat to the safety and security of civilians and warned they risk destabilising the region.
Al Muftah said the deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilian facilities, residential areas and civilians constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian and human rights law, adding that the continuation of such acts cannot be tolerated.
She also warned that targeting a state not party to the conflict, and which has not permitted the use of its territory or airspace for hostilities, represents a serious breach of international law and undermines international peace and security, as well as fundamental rights, including the rights to life, health, education and security.
Al Muftah welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which condemns the attacks on several countries in the region and reaffirms respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, while rejecting the targeting of civilians and vital infrastructure.
She added that Qatar reserves its full right to respond in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter in defence of its sovereignty and security, while reiterating the call for an immediate de-escalation, a return to dialogue and efforts to preserve regional stability.
