Qatar says Iran must stop attacks before talks, warning strikes on energy infrastructure risk global economic consequences.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari has stressed that Iran must halt its attacks before any talks can take place, warning that strikes on energy infrastructure will have global economic consequences.
Speaking at a press briefing in Doha on Tuesday, al-Ansari said Iran must stop targeting Qatar before any meaningful dialogue can begin.
“We are being attacked daily by Iran, so we cannot speak of any talks with it before it ceases its assaults,” he said.
Al-Ansari accused Iran of targeting civilian infrastructure in Qatar and warned that continued strikes could have wide-ranging economic repercussions.
Since the start of the war, he said, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has held only one phone call with Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, though communication channels with Tehran remain open as Doha focuses on de-escalation.
He also said Qatar had hoped that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s apology to Gulf states over the attacks would signal a halt to the strikes, but that the assaults have continued.
“Any attack on Qatar will be handled in the appropriate manner,” al-Ansari said, adding that confronting what he described as Iranian aggression has become a priority due to its impact on both Qatar’s economy and the wider global economy.
He added that Qatar’s armed forces have successfully repelled rocket and drone attacks targeting vital infrastructure and civilian facilities.
Earlier, Qatar’s defence ministry said the armed forces had intercepted a rocket attack.
Authorities said that on Monday, the country faced 17 ballistic missiles and six drone attacks.
Al-Ansari reiterated that Qatar continues to believe in diplomacy and remains open to any role that could help end the conflict, while stressing that attacks against the country and its people are unacceptable.
