Qatar’s relay squad secured a historic World Championships qualification in Gaborone after setting a new national record.
Qatar’s national athletics team achieved a major milestone as the men’s 4x400m relay squad qualified for the World Athletics Championships Beijing 2027, advancing from the opening round for the first time.
Competing in Gaborone, Botswana, the quartet clocked a new national record of 2:59.83 to secure their place among the world’s top teams.
The lineup featured Amar Ismail, Basem Mohammed, Youssef Abdulaziz, and Ashraf Othman, with Samer Hassan named as reserve.
Qatar Athletics Federation President Mohammed Issa Al Fadala described the result as a significant step forward, noting that both the qualification and record time reflect clear technical progress within the team, according to a statement by the Qatar Olympic Committee.

The achievement marks a breakthrough moment for Qatar’s relay program, culminating in this first-ever advancement beyond the initial round at a major international qualification event.
Meanwhile, Qatari athletes also delivered notable performances at the Asian Championships in South Korea.
Hammer thrower Ashraf Elseify secured a bronze medal with a throw of 71.31 meters, adding to Qatar’s medal tally.
Muath Ibrahim advanced to the discus final, while Ahmed Jibril finished sixth in the shot put, registering a personal best of 18.87 meters.
