Qatar called on all parties to adhere to international law and relevant agreements governing maritime boundaries.
Qatar has expressed full solidarity with Kuwait following Iraq’s recent submission of maritime coordinates to the United Nations, which Doha says concern areas under Kuwait’s sovereign control.
In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the coordinates and accompanying map “infringe upon the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait over its maritime areas and its fixed and stable maritime elevations.” The ministry emphasized its backing of Kuwait’s position regarding its territorial waters.
Qatar called on all parties to respect international law and relevant agreements governing maritime boundaries, highlighting the importance of established legal frameworks, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, in resolving disputes.
The statement follows Kuwait’s formal rejection to Baghdad over the submission, which concerns maritime areas in the northern Gulf.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said the filing asserted claims over maritime zones and fixed maritime features, including Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij.
The ministry emphasised that these areas are not disputed and remain under Kuwait’s complete sovereign authority.
Kuwait summoned Iraq’s chargé d’affaires to protest the submission on Saturday.
Iraqi authorities have said the filing was made within the framework of international procedures.
The UAE also voiced support for Kuwait, emphasizing the need for dialogue and respect for sovereignty.
The issue has drawn attention across the Gulf region, where maritime boundaries remain sensitive due to their strategic and economic significance.
Qatar reiterated that any steps affecting sovereign rights should be addressed through diplomatic channels and in accordance with international law and “the understandings, agreements, and memoranda of understanding between Kuwait and Iraq.”
