Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz have risen after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Sunday that they had full operational control over the strategic waterway and warned that any “wrong move” would prompt a severe response.
In a statement reported by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the IRGC said that “all traffic… is under the full control of the armed forces,” adding that “any wrong move will trap the enemy in deadly whirlpools in the strait.”
The IRGC also stated that the strait remains open to civilian shipping under strict military oversight, but warned that any approach by military vessels would be considered a violation of a ceasefire understanding and would be met with force.
Drone footage released alongside the statement was said to show the situation in the strait, with the IRGC claiming that all maritime movements were being closely monitored.
The statement comes amid competing claims over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump posted remarks on Truth Social, threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz, claiming that the U.S. Navy would intervene to prevent ships from passing through the waterway. His comments followed a fragile ceasefire and the failure of talks between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad.
