Government officials have approved new rules to allow domestic workers (i.e. maids, nannies, cooks, house boys, drivers, gardeners) from previously untapped countries, according to local media reports.
Those countries include Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania, Djibouti, Myanmar and China.
The reason given:
“[To] maintain balance in the market and reduce the financial burden on the local employers.”
What do you think? Is this change simply to bring in new competition and lower prices, or is it a deliberate move to circumvent wage and treatment requirements from countries where much of the domestic help is traditionally sourced from?
