Qatar’s capital has rocketed up a list of the most expensive cities in which to live, landing in 76th spot out of 209 urban centers, according to a survey by HR consulting firm Mercer.
Last year, Doha ranked 99th. Like several other Gulf cities, the rise in the value of the US dollar – to which the Qatari riyal is pegged – was one major factor behind Doha’s rise in the rankings, Mercer said. The company added that higher costs for expat rental accommodations also pushed up cities across the GCC. Dubai was the most expensive city in which to live in the region.
