Residents are urged to remain vigilant, exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the competent authorities.
Qatar’s State Security arrested two cells operating on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) within the Gulf state, the Qatari state news agency (QNA) reported on Wednesday.
“As part of the ongoing efforts to protect the security of the State and safeguard its stability, the competent authorities have succeeded in arresting two cells operating on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard within the State of Qatar,” QNA reported, noting the suspects admitted to their crime.
The report said the arrests came following “extensive monitoring and close surveillance operations”, which resulted in the detention of 10 suspects.
Seven of the suspects had been assigned espionage tasks involving the gathering of information on vital and military facilities in Qatar, according to QNA. The remaining three suspects were tasked with carrying out acts of sabotage and had received training in the use of drones.
Qatar’s authorities also found locations and coordinates of sensitive facilities and sites, in addition to communication tools and technical equipment in the suspects’ possession.
“During investigations, the suspects admitted to their affiliation with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and to being assigned espionage and sabotage missions,” QNA reported.
Qatar’s State Security Agency also urged citizens and residents to remain vigilant, exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the competent authorities.
The latest development comes four days of Iranian attacks on Qatar and the wider Gulf region amid the war between Iran, the United States and Israel.
Qatari authorities have been working around the clock to intercept attacks targeting the country, ensuring the population’s safety.
