The donation aims to support the agency’s mission in aiding Palestinian refugees across the region.
The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has pledged $10 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to help sustain its essential services for Palestinian refugees throughout the region, the agency announced on Monday.
In a statement shared on X, UNRWA thanked the QFFD for its donation.
“This support enables us to continue delivering essential services, including education and healthcare, to Palestine Refugees across the region,” the agency posted.
The UNRWA reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the most vulnerable populations.
Since March 2, Israel has kept Gaza’s border crossings closed, preventing the delivery of essential supplies such as food, medicine, and humanitarian aid.
In January, two new Israeli Knesset legislations, passed in October 2024, came into effect.
These laws aim to prevent Israel from engaging with UNRWA and ban the agency from operating in Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank.
The UNRWA was established in 1949 as a subsidiary organ of the UN General Assembly, one year after the establishment of Israel, which was preceded by the mass forced displacement of Palestinians, known as the Nakba.
For over 70 years, the agency has been the primary provider of aid to Palestinian refugees in the occupied West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and neighbouring countries such as Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.
It is the only UN agency dedicated to a specific group of refugees in certain areas.
Israel’s brutal genocide on Gaza has killed some 562 aid workers since October 2023, some in the line of duty. This includes 376 UN staff.
